AFFOA is a non-profit, public-private partnership founded in 2016 as one of the
Department of Defense’s (DoD) Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes.
Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, AFFOA’s mission is to rekindle the domestic textiles
industry by leading a nationwide enterprise for advanced fiber & fabric technology and
manufacturing innovation, enabling revolutionary new system capabilities for
commercial and defense applications.
AFFOA is dedicated to accelerating the pace of innovation in advanced textiles through
R&D, transitioning and integrating fiber and fabric technologies into products with dual-
use applications. The Institute is uniquely positioned to establish and build supply
chains to rapidly prototype for DoD and commercial needs and focuses on preparing
and building the workforce of the future that can support these new manufacturing
needs. AFFOA partners with its member companies including startups, universities,
manufacturers, commercial industry, and defense partners to bring advanced fiber
technologies to market.
This role is responsible for leading development of fiber manufacturing processes,
enabling advancement of textile capabilities. This lead role will be accountable to work
across the teams internal to AFFOA and with external members/partners to develop
industry leading advanced production processes. Successful candidate will also be the
SME on proposal submissions and lead SME within AFFOA in developing and coaching
others in process engineering.
Interfaces with product engineers and manufacturing team to develop and
complete process improvements that will achieve stepwise advancement of fiber
Identifies and owns areas of process improvement including:
o Function as process development specialist with expertise in fiber drawing
technologies, materials, design, and tooling.
o Drive culture of continuous improvement by characterizing and optimizing
existing processes, reducing waste.
o Work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Engineering and other teams to
define, qualify and track new processes and all associated work instructions.
o Utilize lean manufacturing tools and concepts such as value stream mapping
and 5S for continuous improvement.
o Utilize SPC data and other statistical tools to characterize processes for
Participates in multi-disciplinary Agile teams as SME in process development.
o Act in the capacity of Owner/Scrum Master or Team Member in Agile Teams
o Technical liaison between product teams and manufacturing teams
o Support Product Owner in preparing materials for external communication
Acts as process engineering SME/liaison in external engagements
o Provides guidance and recommendations on proposals submitted by
membership as they relate to process feasibility.
o Provides recommendations and guidance to member companies
Carries out other duties as required by leadership to meet Institutional goals.
Minimum BS degree in industrial engineering/polymer science or related field
with greater than 5 years’ experience in process engineering or
MS degree and greater than 3 years of professional experience in a technical
leadership capacity or PhD degree.
